A hippo looks like he has had enough of his freeloaders, while a primate answers the question: “Why do gorillas have big nostrils?” Images from earthporm.com.

This year, whether you are out on safari or just in your backyard, have your camera ready; and not just to post selfies or fail videos (although the latter can be quite entertaining). The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards is looking for entries for its annual grand prize giveaway (last year it was a seven-day safari through southern Tanzania, and a Nikon D750 DSLR with a 24-85mm lens!).

Wildlife photographer Paul Joynson-Hicks started the competition in 2015 with pretty simple rules: all submissions have to be of wild animals, no zoo animals or domesticated pets. That didn’t make judging any easier, as contestants from 52 countries submitted more than 1,500 entries. A group of seven judges (including Joynson-Hicks) sifted through the comedic photos and announced three winners and 12 “commendables.” And what the images lack in back story, they make up for in pure comedic delight.

So enjoy these images, then go outside and look for animals to photograph. Last year’s grand prize winner was a rat. Oh the humanity!
