There are a number of things that you need to take care of in preparation for your vacation out of the country. In addition to the normal items like packing, plane fares, and transportation, there are things like currency exchange, voltage converters, and even more important — decorum.

Americans are seen as obnoxious and rude — mostly because our country is awesome and people get jealous — but also because we are ignorant of many common customs abroad. Eating too much, or refusing food, or using the wrong hand, or giving the thumbs up, or any number of minor actions that may have major implications all contribute to us looking silly, stupid, or even blasphemous. Here’s a list of 17 things you shouldn’t do in other countries.
